Fermentation Cultural Anthropology

Next to the WHOLE EARTH CATALOGUE

Book design of “Fermentation Cultural Anthropology” (Kirakusha) by Mr. Hiraku Ogura. This book was from the popular series of the monthly magazine “Sotokoto”. The design concept is “The book placed next to WHOLE EARTH CATALOGUE which is a typical book that Oregon hippies have.” BAUM’s creative director has been stayed at various hippie houses. They have chicks to get eggs, weird tea leaves to meditate and books to think. He found that this book should be on their shelves to think about foods. Behind the scenes of this design development is introduced in detail on Hiraku Ogura’s blog. The feeling of “fermentation” is scattered everywhere in the graphic. The paper cover has a rough surface to express fermentation. The title typography is made with a pattern from miso with a gloss surface. The inner cover paper texture and color are selected after miso. The word “Je pense, donc je suis” ( “I think, therefore, I am”) appears in the first chapter of the text.
